The Spirit of ‘What About Me?’: FOMO, Coveting, and Comparison
It may wear a modern nameFOMO (Fear of Missing Out)but spiritually? Its ancient.
At its root, this isnt just about feeling left out.
Its about looking at someone elses life, path, or blessing and whispering:
What about me?
That question sounds harmlessrelatable, even.
But it echoes with the same heart posture God warned us about long ago: **coveting.**
Exodus 20:17 says:
“You shall not covet your neighbors house. You shall not covet your neighbors wife… or anything that belongs to your
Its not about the wifeits about the wanting.
Wanting whats not yours.
Wanting what was never part of your path.
Wanting to trade your unfolding for someone elses finish line.
When You Covet, You Miss the Custom
God doesnt give copy-paste callings.
He gives custom onesmeasured, molded, and made just for you.
But when youre fixated on someone elses highlight reel, you:
– Devalue your own progress
– Distrust Gods timing
– Diminish your identity
Wanting Isnt the ProblemWorshiping It Is
Desire is human. But when desire turns into distraction and obsession?
Thats when weve wandered.
Coveting leads to striving.
Striving leads to burnout.
And burnout leads us to question if God even sees us.
Romans 12:2 reminds us:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”
Comparison is the worlds pattern.
Coveting is the worlds currency.
But you werent built to bargain your peace for someone elses prize.
You were built to walk with God.
