What Just Happened????

Some stories don’t end in love, or even a phone number. This isn’t about a date. This is about a man, an elevator, a few Vegas winnings, and $500 that came with a disappearance.

I had only been working there a few short months.

We passed each other a few times in the hallways and shared a couple of elevator rides. There was no real attraction on my end, but I noticed him—mostly because he made eye contact every chance he got. I’m polite, so I’d smile and say hello, keep it moving.

Eventually, those hallway hellos turned into quick desk chats. Nothing deep—just surface-level conversation, most of it about how much he kept winning in Las Vegas. Every time, same energy: excitement, bragging rights, the latest casino win. I played along—“wow” at the right moments, tossed in some light praise when it felt needed, then waited for him to wrap it up.

After a few rounds of these Vegas updates, I jokingly said,
“Okay, where’s my cut? You keep telling me about these winnings and I haven’t even gotten a breakfast burrito.”

We laughed. He left. I moved on with my day.

The following Monday, he came by again, still on the same Vegas high. I said,

“We’re going to have to stop talking if you’re not bringing me a cut.”

And I left it at that.

Next thing I know, he pulls out his wallet, fans out five crisp $100 bills, and hands them to me.

I was shooketh. 😳

I told him I was kidding, but he just grinned and kept insisting—playfully, not pushy—that I take it. I looked him dead in the eye and said,
“Okay. I’m putting this in my drawer until the end of the day. If it’s still there, I’m taking it home. But let me be clear—this money comes with no strings attached.

He agreed.

I checked the drawer a couple of times throughout the day. Still there. Still untouched. Still five hundreds. End of my shift? Still there. So… it went home with me.

A couple days later, I realized I hadn’t seen him around. When I asked about him, someone casually said,
“Oh, he was laid off.”

Just like that. Gone. No goodbye. No phone number. Just a surreal story and $500 I still can’t fully explain.

Some exits don’t need a door slam

Another tale from the files of almost-loved, nearly-liked, or what-was-even-happening.
